Peel Back Time

What is a chemical peel?

chemical peel is a simple in-office procedure that works by exfoliating away the top layer of your skin via a chemical reaction. First, a chemical solution is applied—usually a type of mild acid such as salicylic or glycolic acid—and left on for a certain amount of time to work on the epidermis, where it breaks down dull and damaged skin cells. Once the solution is removed, the underlying layer of skin gets to work, building fresh new skin cells, resulting in a smoother, younger, healthier-looking complexion.

Fresh New Skin

What are the benefits of a chemical peel?

A chemical peel refreshes the entire face at once, reducing visible signs of aging and skin damage and giving your skin a more youthful radiance. Fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, dark spots, uneven texture or tone, and melasma can all be reduced by chemically exfoliating the skin’s outer layer and prompting the rebuilding of new, healthy surface cells. Because this procedure comes in different strengths, our Lenexa chemical peel patients can select the peel that provides the level of rejuvenation you want and fits with your schedule for taking any needed downtime to recover.

Which peel is right for you?

Your Chemical Peel Consultation

Schedule your consultation with an Azalea aesthetic specialist to get assistance selecting the best chemical peel for your needs. In general, the lighter the peel, the less time your skin will need to recover. A medium or deep peel will provide more dramatic restoration but will require more downtime to heal. At your consultation, we will ask you about your medical history, including any medications you take and any known allergies. During a chemical peel Lenexa aesthetic experts at Azalea Med Spa will also analyze your skin to ensure that we match you with a peel that can safely deliver the results you desire. You can then choose to have your peel right away or schedule an appointment to come back at your convenience.

Your Chemical Peel Procedure

Before your peel, you will need to avoid using topical Retin-A products for at least 48 hours. Do not have a peel if you have taken Accutane in the past six months. Once you are reclined in one of our comfortable treatment chairs, your skin will be cleansed, and you may be given goggles to protect your eyes. The chemical solution will then be carefully applied to your skin. If you have a deep peel, you will be given an anesthetic before the peel is applied for your comfort. Once the peel has done its work, your aesthetic specialist will either wash it off or add a neutralizing solution.

Chemical Peel Results

Once your skin has sloughed off its old outer layer and produced new surface cells, you should see a visible improvement in its texture and radiance. Fine lines will be less noticeable, and dark marks or areas of melasma should appear lighter, creating a more even skin tone. Your skin may look dewy and glowing due to the replenished surface cells. These results will be most pronounced following a deep peel, but any level of chemical peel will provide you with a noticeably refreshed complexion.

Chemical Peel Recovery and Aftercare

Your Lenexa chemical peel will immediately remove damaged skin cells and activate the process of cellular rejuvenation. However, your skin will need some time to heal before your full results become visible. After a light peel, your skin will be red and tender, similar to the way it feels after a sunburn. After a medium or deep peel, your skin may form crusts and feel quite tender as the old skin is sloughed off and new skin cells are generated. Make sure to follow all aftercare instructions carefully in order to protect your skin as it heals. It takes a week or less to fully recover from a light peel, while a deep peel may require a couple of weeks to show results.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the risks?

There is a risk of redness, eye irritation, changes in skin tone, and activation of a cold sore outbreak for individuals with the HSV-1 virus. A deep peel carries a rare but serious risk of kidney, liver, or heart damage. For this reason, deep peels are administered a little bit at a time to limit exposure to the carbolic acid used in this type of treatment.

You may schedule mild or medium peels at intervals to obtain optimal results. You may only have one deep chemical peel.

Because pregnancy can cause several ongoing changes in your skin, it is better to wait until after you’ve given birth to have a chemical peel.
